20 Steps

Savannah is a walking girl!!!  Last week Savannah started taking just a few steps.  She would step with one foot then the other and decide it was too much and, with control, get back into the crawl position and take off.  At one point she took six steps but I didn't consider her a walking girl.  It wasn't until Sunday that I classified her as a walker.  She took about 20 steps walking to me across the kitchen!!!!  I couldn't believe it!  We made a game of it.  We would put her one of the kitchen chair so she could get her balance and then we would sit by the fridge and she would walk to us.  From time to time she wouldn't make it but that is to be expected.  A few times she would be so excited that she just couldn't contain herself.  She would start off too quickly and barely make two steps.  Now it is just a matter of time before she is so confident that crawling is a thing of the past.  This shot was taken on Monday just as she was taking off; Savannah walked across the living room to me from the couch.  I had her shirt so she when she got to me I put it on her. (Note: For some reason no matter how I rotated this photo it wouldn't upload right side up.  Turn your heard for the proper effect.)

blood as far as the eye can see

I don't have a problem with blood, I can totally handle it.  It sucks when I bleed but it is worse when a baby bleeds, they aren't supposed to bleed.  It was horrible the first time Savannah bled.  I was clipping her thumb nail and I had the clippers just right.  I clipped down as Savannah jerked her hand and I nipped her.  It was horrible.  I felt like the worst mother in the world.  There were tears from both of us.  Savannah cried from the pain while I cried that I hurt my baby.

The latest and greatest episodes of blood happened more recently.  Savannah bumped her bottom lip this last Wednesday and it caused a little boo boo but no blood shed.  Thursday she busted that boo boo right open while playing at my feet under the computer desk.  I had no idea because she didn't cry.  All of a sudden she comes out and there is blood all over her face and hands.  I cleaned her up and she was totally fine except for her pitiful looking lip.

Friday Savannah had her nine month check-up.  The doctor had to have blood drawn from her little thumb to check her iron level.  After the trauma was over the nurse put a cotton ball on her thumb and secured it with a bandage.  Savannah is like every baby in that she has to put every thing in her mouth.  On the way to the car she bit off a piece of the cotton but I was too late, she swallowed it.  GREAT!?!?!  On our way home I had to get some baby food so we stopped at Harmons.  I got into the back of the car to get her out only to find Savannah spit up the cotton, took the bandage off, and there is blood everywhere.  She got it on her face, hands, clothes, brand new white shoes, car seat, and up both legs to her knees and the blood was still flowing.  I scrambled to get a new band aide on her (the last one in my diaper bag) and wiped up as much blood off as I could.  We got in the store only to find she already got the new band aide off.  Come on!!!  I rushed around the store to find the band aides, ripped open the box (the waterproof kind) and got it on her little thumb.  She worked on the new bandage while I picked out the organic baby food and made our way over for a visit in the flower department with cousin Melissa.  We headed for the checkout when I noticed that while I was being rung up the band aide was gone.  She must have dropped it.  We get out to the car only for me to notice that she had something in her mouth.  Savannah almost had the band aide swallowed.  I caught it in the nick of time.  AHHHHHHH!  Screw another band aide!  She bled until we got home which wasn't soon enough!

Delicious Chocolate

The holidays are an excuse for those of us who love chocolate to indulge a bit more than usual instead of limiting our consumption throughout the year.  This morning I didn't need to limit my consumption but the consumption of my nine month old daughter, Savannah.  You see, in the mornings I wake up and sweep the floor then eat breakfast while my daughter plays at my feet.  This morning I opted to shake things up a bit.  Instead of sweeping after I set up the morning barricades (so Savannah wouldn't find her way to things she is not supposed to) I prepared my breakfast.  While I eat Savannah has to eat or she gets mad so I gave her a small plain piece of bread to munch on while sitting at my feet.  She decided to wander around a little while eating her bread which is totally fine.  In between bites I would look over and make sure she was doing fine.  All of a sudden I looked and saw some brown green spit dripping from her mouth.  I rush to her only to see she found an M&M on the floor.  She wasn't supposed to have a taste of sweets until her first birthday when she could eat a mini cake just for her.  Alas, my plan was foiled all because I had to eat this morning before I swept.  Lesson learned: sweep first, eat later.
